When Aliens decide whether or not, we are worthy of being ascended to the stars, Toyota not putting the 2ZZ in the MR2 will ultimately be what keeps us as Earthbound Luddites. Clearly we do not seek greatness as a species.

The 1ZZ is a high performance engine?

The aimed at enthusiasts part comes from Subaru.

Was there any redeeming feature of the 1zz-FED despite being built in Japan?

The 1ZZ was the automotive equivalent of dating a nice girl and finding out her sister is just as practical and good for the long term but otherwise better in every single way.

..... so no.

Yeah it allows you to get experience with engine swaps for when you do the job Toyota should of done in the first place.

And then they realised that enthusiasts only buy used.

Maybe they’ll take you if you did it yourself?

The vvtli crossover was just too high for it to really win people over. I love going to the 4500rpm manifold crossover on the 5, but I couldn’t imagine bothering if it didn’t activate until 5200. With the 2zz, It appears close to impossible to stay on the high lift cam with the factory settings. At least on the street.

Best Sci Fi premise I’ve heard for a while.

Other than okay longevity, no. No there is not. It’s a buzzy little motor that works hard to get very little done.

The 7G Celica was Toyota’s post-coital attempt at making an actual enthusiast-minded line of cars. It was the ending of a generation of awesome cars like the Supra, the Alltrac Celicas, and all those Marlboro funded rally funded programmes.

1ZZ is not, 2ZZ can be considered based on the current lineup of Toyota engines.

Honda knows what they are doing with VTEC, but they are slowly getting irrelevant within the current world of cars

It was way lighter than 6th gen celicas too. I hate the styling of the car, but they were fantastic to drive and got a lot more things right than anyone gives them credit for.

Oh yeah, the 2zz was great. Our Matrix only has the 1zz and it’s somehow slower than a single exhaust NPI Crown Vic with 2.73s.
